The UPN-PM2030 is a portable non-destructive inspection device and is used as a “contraband detector” to detect hidden items (drugs, explosives, weapons, etc.) inside closed cavities of vehicles, containers and other devices.

The device allows you to search for inhomogeneities in inspection mode and determine the type of material detected, as well as create libraries of inspection objects. The modular design of the device makes it possible to scan in hard-to-reach places. Using a telescopic extension, the user can inspect large cargo, and a vibration alarm in the handle of the device allows for hidden detection.

The device stores the history of events in non-volatile memory, and also gives sound and light signals when the set thresholds are exceeded. The audio alarm can be transmitted to headphones via Bluetooth.

UPN-PM2030 can be used as a “smuggling detector” by customs authorities, special services and other departments to detect hidden attachments inside the cavities of various vehicles, containers and other objects.

 

Operating principle

The device consists of two modules: an information processing unit (IPU) and a scanning unit (BS) with a rubberized handle.

The principle of operation of the device in inspection mode is based on recording reflected radiation from the object under study. The device uses a gamma radiation source133Ba activity 320-370 kBq. The source is located inside a safe lead container-collimator BS.

The intensity of the reflected radiation depends on the properties of the object under study (its density and size). The device moves along the surface of the object under study. The change in object density is displayed on the device screen and is duplicated by light, sound, and vibration signals. The repetition rate of the signals depends on the size and density of the detected cavity or attachment.

The lead container-collimator provides the necessary narrow zone of irradiation of the object in the inspection mode and complete protection of the operator from gamma radiation.

 

Characteristics in inspection mode

In inspection mode, the device determines the density of the material of the detected object (plastic or metal) behind a partition made of wood or plastic no more than 20 mm thick, as well as a group of metals with a probability of 0.5.

The result of determining the metal group is displayed on the LCD in the form of the name of the corresponding metal group:

  • silver (ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, cadmium, indium, tin, antimony)
  • lanthanum (tellurium, iodine, xenon, cesium, barium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium)
  • gadolinium (neodymium, promethium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium)
